Ubuntu is an African concept that expresses the ideas of connection, community, and mutual caring for all. Translating to “I am what I am because of who we all are.” or “The belief that we are defined by our compassion and kindness toward others.”
After visiting Uganda in 2016 to meet the children we sponsor through Compassion International, I realized my view of poverty was distorted. It is not merely an issue of money, but affects a person’s self-worth, confidence, health, education, and ability to hope.
Upon return home, I knew I needed to do more to fight poverty than just send money and a letter. I could paint, but I hadn’t picked up a paintbrush in over 8 years, still it felt like a good place to start. So, I painted thirteen portraits of children we had met on the trip.
These portraits give a glimpse of what I saw in the faces of children living in poverty. They are filled with a longing to be seen and loved. They look to an unsure future but have hope and dreams that are strengthened by sponsors who support them, not only financially, but also through words of affirmation and encouragement.
The portraits speak of my contribution to Ubuntu not only in Africa, but worldwide. I exhibit these painting to help share the story of Compassion and they are the foundation Prince Art Studio is built on… the legacy we hope to leave behind. 100% of the purchase price for these particular portraits supports Compassion International. I believe in the work Compassion does and I know together we can be difference makers.
If you would like to join the fight against poverty there are several things you can do. Buy a piece of pottery or a painting. Sponsor a child through Compassion International. Donate to Compassion International or International Justice Mission. If you have questions, I would love to talk with you. You can email me through our contact form here.
